If you have a gum grafting procedure scheduled in order to correct receding gums, you are likely interested in what you can do to speed up your recovery. Fortunately, there are a variety of post care instructions that you can follow in order to have a speedy recovery after a gum graft.
Managing Your Discomfort You may experience some pain and discomfort following your procedure. It is recommended that for the first few hours after your surgery that you place a bag of ice onto your face for 20 minute intervals. This can help to minimize facial swelling, and you can do this for the first 24 hours if needed. You can also take over-the counter pain relief medications like ibuprofen in order to prevent pain, swelling, and inflammation.
If you experience minor bleeding, you shouldn't be concerned. Simply rinse out your mouth gently with water or place pressure onto the area with moist gauze or a tea bag for up to 20 minutes. A bandage will likely be placed over the area by your dentist, and should it fall off and you feel comfortable, you can leave it off.
What You Should Eat After you return home following your procedure, you can eat soft food or drink cold beverages. The evening following your surgery, it is recommended that you choose a soft, bland meal. While you can start integrating other foods into your diet the next day, you shouldn't eat anything crunchy or hard for the week following your procedure.
Taking Care of Your Mouth
After your procedure, be sure to not pull your lip down to check out the graft site. Doing so could dislodge some of the healing tissue. You should also avoid brushing the area in which the procedure was performed so that you don't disrupt the healing process. You can continue with your regular dental health routine throughout the rest of your mouth.
