A woman drinking a glass of warm salt water. The use of saltwater rinses serve many beneficial purposes with regards to your oral hygiene. They are not only useful for the occasional sore throat and for warding off pesky painful mouth or gum sores, but also in fighting infection.

Though the use of a saltwater rinse can by no means replace your everyday oral hygiene habits such as brushing and flossing, it does serve as an effective supportive measure.

Saltwater Promotes Healing

The healing abilities of saltwater cannot be overlooked nor denied. This magic, yet so basic, concoction is one of the most effective ways to heal. In the mouth, a saltwater rinse is largely impactful in preventing bacterial infection post dental surgery. Because a saltwater rinse is an isotonic solution, meaning that it is made up of the same minerals that already exist in our bodies, it therefore will not disturb the imbalance mucous membranes vital for proper healing.

Saltwater Fights Off Bacteria

Saltwater rinses flood the mouth with an alkaline environment due to the temporary increase in the mouths pH levels. This creates a less than ideal atmosphere for bacteria to breed since they tend to prefer more acidic environments and thus they struggle to survive.

Whipping up a quick saltwater solution is no more difficult than pouring mouthwash into a cup. You simply add ½ teaspoon of salt to 1 cup of warm water. Let the salt dissolve and rinse, taking care to rinse for about a minute.

This can be done post-surgical operations in order to prevent infection, it can be done to soothe and heal mouth sores or wounds, also to temporarily replace antibacterial mouthwashes should you run out of your everyday preferred brand.

Though a saltwater mouth rinse can be very effective in healing, soothing and preventing bacterial growth it should not be used to replace any regular oral hygiene procedures, but rather as more of a supplementary solution
