Make Sure You're Caring for Your Dental Implants Properly
Posted on 6/30/2016 by Implant & Periodontal Associates NW
Dental implants are designed to be permanent and long-lasting solutions to tooth loss, but only if you make the commitment to care for them properly. Without consistent care, implants can develop problems and may even fail.
While your periodontist will give you advice on how to properly care for them after your procedure, keep the following tips in mind if you are living with dental implants.
Practice Good Oral Hygiene
Dental implants need to be kept clean and free of plaque. This requires twice daily cleanings by brushing and flossing, ensuring that you are giving special attention to each side of the implant. You also need to play close attention to the oral hygiene aids that you are using, including a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste for tartar control.
Invest in Some Dental Supplies
In addition to the standard toothbrush and floss that everyone will need in order to keep their teeth clean, there are some other supplies that can help if you have implants.
An antimicrobial rinse can help to keep your mouth clean, and inter-dental brushes could be useful in removing plaque that might accumulate between your teeth and the implant.
Visit Your Dentist Regularly
Even if you have a full mouth of dental implants, you still need to keep up with your regular dental appointments. Your periodontist will need to regularly inspect your implants and the health of your gums and jawbone to ensure that they are still able to support your restoration.
Similar to the natural teeth, implants can also accumulate plaque and tartar, and regular cleanings will be needed to remove these deposits before they can cause gum disease and other problems.
