The General Progression of Gum Disease

Posted on 2/27/2017 by Implant & Periodontal Associates NW
A patients mouth suffering from gum disease.Gum disease is a progressive disease, meaning that it starts out as a minor issue and, if left untreated, slowly progresses to become more serious and less susceptible to efforts to treat or reverse it. Here are the stages of gum disease.

At this stage the gum tissue around the tooth is inflamed, but no significant infection has set in yet. At this stage, the gum disease will almost always respond to simple dental hygiene practices such as regular brushing and flossing.

Early Periodontitis

At this stage the gums are inflamed, and the inflammation has moved into the surrounding tissue. There is some early bone loss here, and treatment is a little bit tougher than with gingivitis. Nevertheless, with proper treatment at this stage, it is highly likely that the disease will cease its development and eventually disappear, although the bone loss may be permanent.

Moderate Periodontitis

The gums and surrounding tissues are inflamed, and bone loss from the jawbone is more moderate. The teeth may be wobbly if bone loss is severe enough.

Advanced Periodontitis

There is significant gum recession and bone loss. Teeth may come out or need to be extracted. This condition can contribute to other health risks as well.

As you can see, regular brushing and flossing are important not just to keep your teeth looking good, but even to keep them in your mouth. Gum disease is a serious condition that can cause you to lose teeth and experience bone loss in your jawbone.
