Reshaping Your Smile After Advanced Gum Disease

Posted on 7/23/2017 by Implant & Periodontal Associates NW
Cosmetic dentistry after gum disease can help you smile more confidently.
When you get to the point of having advanced gum disease, which is also known as periodontitis, your mouth is likely not the same as it used to be. Your gums may have receded, your teeth may not be in the right places or you may be missing some, and your jaw bone may have begun deteriorating. Each of these requires different procedures to correct. Depending on the condition of your mouth following your periodontitis treatment, you may need one or many procedures to reshape your smile.

Procedures That Often Follow Advanced Gum Disease

If your gums began to recede during your bout with gum disease, you may need tissue grafts to help build up the gum tissue. You may also need a bone graft below the new gum tissue to build up the bone so the new gum tissue has something to hold on to. If your teeth shifted, sometimes they need to be pushed back into place. This can be done with aligners or more traditional braces for those specific teeth. Missing teeth need replacing, which may mean a bridge, a partial denture, a full set of dentures, or even dental implants. This will help restore your confidence, plus your ability to chew and speak like normally.

If your jaw bone began to deteriorate, you may need bone grafts put back into the bone to build up bone quantity and density. Each of these take time to perform, and additional time to recover from. However, when done properly, your smile can be rebuilt and reshaped to look much like you did before your gum disease. If you want to find out more about what you can do to help restore your smile, ask your periodontist. They know best when it comes to reshaping your smile.
