Soft Tissue Ridge Augmentation for Dental Implants
Here at Implant & Periodontal Associates NW in Kenmore in Kenmore, WA we want all of our patients to be happy with the appearance and function of their smile. Dental implants are currently the best way to replace missing teeth in both form and function. They give those who are missing teeth a way to eat and speak as they did before tooth loss. Sometimes, patients who have been missing teeth for a prolonged time will need more than just dental implant placement to bring their mouth back to full health and to give their smile the aesthetic value that they deserve. For those who have experienced some degree of soft tissue loss, soft tissue ridge augmentation procedures go hand-in-hand with the dental implant procedure.
What are Dental Implants?Dental implants are surgically placed permanent tooth replacement options. Dental implants consist of three components that fit together to make a functioning tooth restoration. The parts of a dental implant are – the titanium implant post, the abutment, and the implant restoration (crown, bridge, or full arch). The first part of the dental implant placement procedure is the surgical placement of the titanium implant post into the jaw bone. Once the implant post has had several months to heal we will then place the implant abutment, which screws into the top of the titanium implant and serves as an attachment point for the final part, the implant restoration. The implant restoration can be a dental crown, bridge, or even a full arch prosthesis that is made to replace all the teeth on the top or bottom arch of your mouth.
What is Soft Tissue Ridge Augmentation?Soft tissue ridge augmentations are essentially like any other skin grafting procedures, but the graft is typically sourced from within your mouth. We will take a small graft of skin from the roof or soft palate of your mouth to fill in the areas that are lacking in gum structure. An incision will be made at the grafting site, and we will carefully place the graft onto the area and suture it in place.
Dental Implants for Those with Severe Periodontal IssuesSoft tissue ridge augmentation is a procedure that can help to give a more natural look to a smile that has suffered from serious periodontal issues. Extensive tooth loss is often a result of untreated periodontal issues, also known as gum disease. Poor periodontal health can lead to tooth loss, bone loss in the jaw and soft tissue degeneration and loss in the mouth.
When a patient who has suffered from severe periodontal issues approaches us about having dental implants placed, soft tissue ridge augmentation may be one of the procedures that we suggest they have done. If you don’t have enough healthy soft tissues around your dental implants, there is a chance that the implants won’t look quite right. The implant post can show in your smile, and the gums can appear pocked or dented.
