Periodontal disease is a chronic condition that often requires special attention. Dentistry, like other branches of medicine, has both general practitioners and specialists. A periodontist is a medical specialist whose focus is on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease. In addition to our general dental education, we receive extensive training in periodontics. In fact, we are required to complete three additional years of education beyond dental school in order to be certified as periodontists. Like your primary care physician, your general dentist handles your overall oral care needs. If they become complex, your primary provider will often refer you to a specialist. In our case, we work with general dentists to manage cases that require specialized periodontal treatment. Your regular dentist will still oversee your care, but they know when a situation warrants specialty treatment. This way, we can all work together to ensure that you receive the best care for your periodontal condition. |
