According to recent findings by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), half of all Americans over age 30 have gum disease. By age 65, that figure jumps to 70 percent.
What is gum disease?
Gum disease is caused by a buildup of oral bacteria, which produces acids that cause inflammation. The disease often goes unnoticed in its early stages, but as it progresses, patients can suffer such unpleasant symptoms as chronic bad breath, hot and cold sensitivity, and even tooth loss. Gum disease breaks down the tissue holding teeth in place, and once it's gone, it's almost impossible to get back.
A new alternative to gum surgery
Traditional treatment involved surgery, which meant incisions, stitches, and considerable recovery time. But now, there's a new laser therapy that's simple, fairly painless, and has been shown to actually help grow new cells in the tooth root and connective tissue while stopping the progression of the disease. It's called LANAP®, and it's currently the best treatment available for gum disease. Dr. Cohen and Dr. Gottlieb and Implant & Periodontal Associates Northwest are proud to be the first specialty practice in Washington to offer this breakthrough procedure.
How LANAP works
LANAP stands for Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure. As the name suggests, it uses a laser to completely remove periodontal bacteria and damaged tissue, sealing up the area while sparing healthy cells. The patented laser wavelength also stimulates the growth of stem cells in the gum and tooth structures. While LANAP cannot completely restore lost tissue, it does help reverse the damage and keep your smile healthy.
LANAP is also extremely patient-friendly. No cutting or stitches are required. Patients can usually return to normal activities the next day.
We strive to provide the latest technologies and therapies to our patients. We'll recommend a treatment plan, which may also include regular cleanings and maintenance visits, to help ensure your periodontal disease stays under control.
