Do Your Teeth Like You Taking Daily Multivitamins?

Posted on 5/17/2017 by Implant & Periodontal Associates NW
A collection of vitamins beside each other.
Multivitamins allow you to make sure that you are getting all of the essential vitamins and minerals you might otherwise not be getting throughout the day.

In doing so, they help you to ensure a healthy body. They are supposed to be good for your whole body, including your mouth. But are they causing harm to your teeth?

Too Many Minerals
It is possible to overdose on certain vitamins. Whereas some, if you take in excess, are simply flushed out of the body, others stick around. Too much of a good thing, even minerals, can have adverse effects. With respect to your teeth, an overabundance of minerals can often lead to hard to remove staining.

Chewable Vitamins

Chewable vitamins, while often marketed towards children, are also popular with adults. One of the biggest issues with chewables is that they are filled with sugar, making them taste good. And all that sugar can lead to tooth decay and gum disease, as it provides food for oral bacteria. Fortunately, the powder that lingers from chewing one of these vitamins is easily rinsed away with a glass of water.

Gummy Vitamins

Much like chewable vitamins, gummy vitamins are high in sugar, making them appealing, especially to children. However, gummies can be more detrimental than chewables, as they are sticky, and tend to linger on teeth, even if you drink a glass of water after chewing them, leading to serious problems for your teeth.

What Should You Do?
It is possible to get all of your essential vitamins through food alone. However, many people find this difficult, which is where a multivitamin comes into play. If you do choose to use a multivitamin, make sure that you get a tablet that you can easily swallow.
Multivitamins do have their place.

Before you start a supplement, be sure to contact our office and discuss your options. And don't forget, the keys to healthy teeth and gums is through brushing, flossing and regular dental checkups.
