The Dangers of Receding Gums

Receding gums are common when you struggle with gum disease. The gum tissue gets inflamed and the gums pull back as the tissue begins to slowly die off. This can leave your teeth at risk, and it can spread to other areas of your mouth, putting all of your gum tissue at risk.

If you believe you may have gum disease, it is imperative that you visit your periodontist, and if you don't have one yet, see your dentist. They can put you in touch with a specialist who can help.

Receding Gums Can Quickly Lead to Tooth Loss

When your gums pull back, it leaves your teeth far more exposed than when they were covered by your gums. The gums work with the jaw bone to hold your teeth in place, because the jaw bone is not tall enough to do the job on its own. When the gums recede, this leaves the short jaw bone to try and hold your tooth in place. It doesn't take long before the tooth becomes loose, and if not treated, will fall out.

Losing one tooth often leads to losing multiple teeth when the problem is not treated. Your gums play a vital role in your mouth in how they protect your teeth. If you let them shrink, it will take a lot of time, effort, and money to fix the problem. Don't allow your oral health to decline like that, or you may spend the rest of your life trying to fix what could have been prevented.

Talk to your periodontist if your gums are inflamed or if they regularly bleed when you brush, as those are the earliest signs of gum disease. Don't let it get so bad that it cannot be corrected without extra measures being taken.
